When something in the home catches on fire, it can be disastrous. Hopefully, the fire will be small and be contained and extinguished before any major damage is done, but that is not always the case. When the fire department has to be called and you have perhaps an entire room that has been damaged or worse, then the chances of you being able to clean up and restore a mess like that might not be possible. If the fire was small and you managed to get it put out yourself, it can still leave a mess. It does not take a big fire to produce a lot of soot residue or to leave that stinky fire smell that seems to linger forever, but it might actually cost you a lot more to pay your home owners insurance deductible than it will to just clean it up on your own and it will probably not be that difficult to do.

Usually soot is not that difficult to clean off of non-porous surfaces, but if it gets into things like your draperies, curtains, furniture upholstery, or carpeting, it might be more hard to remove. If you have a lot of soot on things like this, you might want to go ahead and get a professional cleaner for this because you do not want to cause the soot to stain and become set in due to a poor or inadequate cleaning attempt.

Many small fires start in the kitchen and these might be cleaned up easier if they are extinguished quickly, but if you have to use a fire extinguisher, there will be white residue everywhere along with the soot from the fire itself. If you use a degreasing cleaner, sponges, and change the water often, either in the sink or a bucket, you should not have much difficulty getting it all cleaned up, but it could take a little while depending on the extent of the mess.

You do not have to be a genius in order to clean up some soot and extinguisher residue, but you need to make sure that there was no damage done to any electrical wiring or appliances. This is something else that you may need to call in a professional for. You should not take any risk where there is electricity involved because the last thing you want is to start another fire.
